Standout students honored at award and scholarship ceremonies

TEMPLETON — Sofia Talarico took home a few awards and scholarships this May. The graduating Templeton Highschool (THS) senior received the prestigious “Eagle of the Year” award, as well as the Top Scholar Cumulative Award, STEM Award, Spanish Award, SAT Award, Life Science Award, CSF Award and the ACT Award. She also received three scholarships presented on scholarship night: The Monday Club Conservancy Fine Arts Award Scholarship, Vocal Arts SLO Scholarship and THS Drama Boosters Scholarship. Talarico will be attending UC Irvine, majoring in Musical Theater and Biology.

Local hospitals hosting Cereal Drive to help feed local kids during Summer months

TEMPLETON — Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, which houses the only dedicated pediatric unit in San Luis Obispo County, and Twin Cities Community Hospital are leading a community effort to provide area children struggling with hunger with a healthy breakfast during the summer through its Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive benefiting The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County. The drive kicks off Friday, June 1, and runs through Friday, June 8.

Fires hit the North County

NORTH COUNTY — Three fires broke out in the North County this week. The first was a building fire in the well known Mercantile of Santa Margarita. The others were vegetation fires: one on May 28 which was named the Toleman Fire and the other on Tuesday, May 29 called the Vineyard Fire.

Friday Night Live teens receive scholarship

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Friday Night Live of San Luis Obispo County has awarded ten local high school seniors with the annual Friday Night Live (FNL) Scholarship. The FNL Board of Directors is proud to point the spotlight on Israel Vargas (Shandon HS), Alejandra Barrera (Atascadero HS), Courtney Basden (Atascadero HS), Julia Aurignac (Templeton HS), Haley Hurdle (Templeton HS), Haley Cudworth (Templeton HS), Amanpreet Mangat (Arroyo Grande HS), and Itzel Lopez Jaimes (Paso Robles HS) who each received $500 and were honored at FNL’s first Annual FNL Banquet on May 17 at 6 p.m. at the SLO Vet’s Hall. Natalie Ziegler (SLOHS) and Bianca Soto (Shandon HS) received $750 scholarships, given in the name of Casey Goodwin, a 20-year-old Cuesta College student and active youth alcohol-prevention advocate, who was killed by a drunk driver in March, 2003. These deserving seniors were recognized for their own advocacy, leadership, and commitment to healthy lifestyles for their peers.

‘Mama loves pickleball tournament’ served on Mother’s Day

TEMPLETON — Last weekend, May 12 and 13, over 120 avid Pickleball players from Central California met at the Templeton Tennis Ranch for a Round-Robin Doubles Skills Tournament. Twelve of our Atascadero Pickleball Club (APC) players won “Silver” and are pictured along with Pickleball Ambassador Kelly Forrestall. This tournament was one of APC’s fundraisers toward permanent courts. For more information about APC, call (805) 440-3914. Twin Cities Community Hospital earns ‘LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader’ Designation

TEMPLETON — Twin Cities Community Hospital has earned its “LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader” designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), becoming the first and only hospital in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties to do so. The designation was awarded in the 11th edition of the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), released today. A record 626 healthcare facilities actively participated in the HEI 2018 survey, with HRC Foundation proactively researching key policies at more than 900 additional non-participating hospitals. Of those included in the HEI, 418 earned a “LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader” designation.
